The site of Saint-Nicaise is one of the most prestigious sites of the Champagne production, gathering wine producers of great international fame. It is located in the south-east of the historic center of Reims, on an ancient territory straddling the medieval city and the hillock invested by the great Champagne estates.
It is part of the serial property "Coteaux, Maisons et Caves de Champagne", inscribed in 2015 on the World Heritage List, with the historic hillsides of Cumières and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and the Avenue de Champagne in Epernay.
This chalk hill is composed of old quarries and wells which, in medieval times, were used to extract chalk. These famous ''crayères'' became, with time, a place of storage and refining of wines. Under the Saint-Nicaise hillock, 57 kilometers of galleries run and preserve the productions of six great houses.
