A true small, autonomous fortified castle and very emblematic of the city, the Porte des Allemands owes its name to the Teutonic Knights, or hospital brothers of Notre Dame des Allemands, who founded a hospital nearby as early as the 13th century. It is the most imposing remaining building of the medieval ramparts, both a double gate and a bridge over the Seille. From the Porte des Allemands starts the circuit of the ramparts, which allows you to discover the remains of the fortifications of the city of Metz.
