Built in 1928, the Monument aux Morts et aux Enfants de Verdun (Monument to the Dead and Children of Verdun) is based on the half moon of the Chaussée, whose construction was ordered by the Marshal de Vauban in the 17th century. It stands in place of the military butcher's shop destroyed in 1916. This war memorial represents the five corps of the French army engaged during the battle of 1916.
From left to right, one can see: a cavalryman, a sapper of the Engineers, a soldier of the Infantry, also called "Poilu", an artilleryman and a soldier of the Territorial Army. These five soldiers form a wall symbolizing the motto of Verdun: "On ne pas passer". At the foot of the monument are inscribed the names of the soldiers who died during the First and Second World Wars.
