The galleries of the Palais-Royal in Paris, built in the early 1800s, were seen as something quite new, a public area sheltered from the elements and ideal for a gentle stroll.
Charles Fourier was inspired by them to design his own "gallery-street" as the main thoroughfare of his projected Phalanstery. Heated in winter and ventilated in summer, it would have been easy and comfortable to get around.
During the 19th century, the Fourierist "gallery-street" was used in social housing projects such as Henry Robert's affordable housing scheme in London and Alexandre Veugny's Cité Napoléon in Paris.
