Las galerías del Palais-Royal en París, construidas a principios del siglo XIX, fueron vistas como algo totalmente nuevo: un espacio público protegido de los elementos e ideal para un paseo tranquilo.
Charles Fourier se inspiró en esto para diseñar su propia "calle de galerías" como la calle principal de su planificado Phalanstère. Calentada en invierno y ventilada en verano, habría sido fácil y cómodo llegar hasta allí.
En el siglo XIX, la "calle de galerías" Fourierista se utilizó en proyectos de vivienda social como el proyecto de vivienda asequible de Henry Robert en Londres y el Cité Napoléon de Alexandre Veugny en París.
