Les galeries du Palais-Royal à Paris, construites au début du XIXe siècle, étaient perçues comme quelque chose de complètement nouveau : un espace public à l'abri des intempéries et idéal pour une promenade paisible.
Charles Fourier s'en est inspiré pour concevoir sa propre « rue des galeries » comme rue principale de son projet de Phalanstère. Chauffé en hiver et ventilé en été, il aurait été facile et confortable d'y accéder.
Au XIXe siècle, la « rue galerie » fouriériste fut utilisée dans des projets de logements sociaux tels que le projet de logements abordables d'Henry Robert à Londres et la Cité Napoléon d'Alexandre Veugny à Paris.
