In the Middle Ages, Saint-Girons was a Sauveté which could rival that of Mimizan in importance. At the exit of the village, towards Linxe, stands a 5 m high white stone column in the Rue des Chênes, a vestige of this Sauveté whose inhabitants, placed under the authority of the lord and the ecclesiastics, benefited from protection and certain franchises. These savannahs were centres of settlement and places of refuge for pilgrims to Santiago.
