With its 19th-century stills still in operation, the distillery reveals some of its age-old secrets!
At the heart of a traditional distillery founded in 1789, the museum bears witness to the 48 distilleries that existed in Limoges in 1900.
For almost two centuries, Limoges was the city of distilleries. A major trading center, it received cognac, armagnac, rum, liqueur wines, cane sugar, fruit, plants and spices, all of which were essential to the manufacture of numerous specialties. With plenty of oak trees to make barrels, pure, tasty water and a skilled, creative workforce, Limoges saw a new activity develop and prosper alongside porcelain. From 1780 to 1930, there were several dozen distilleries in Limoges.
