The Château d'Assier is an exemplary testimony to the spread of Renaissance art outside the Loire Valley.
Built between 1518 and 1535 in the style of the new pleasure castles, it is the work of a very rich gentleman, Galiot de Genouillac, Grand Ecuyer of France, Grand Master of Artillery of François 1st.
It consisted of a vast quadrilateral plan, of which the entrance wing remains, pierced by a spectacular portal with porticoes, loggias and pediments. The courtyard façade is decorated with window bays and two large friezes, richly carved with emblems that refer to the military functions of Galiot de Genouillac and the legend of Hercules.
