Château de Volkrange

Irmengarde approaches the window. She holds her candle tightly in one hand, protecting the flame with the other. For several weeks now, this breath of light has kept her in touch with her fiancé. Why did he leave? Why did he want to distinguish himself to his father? Probably to earn it.
Having left on the Crusade with Arnoux II, advisor to Countess Ermesinde of Luxembourg and builder of Volkrange Castle, Guerlach never thought he'd see his beautiful Irmengarde again. Having fought valiantly and won his daughter's hand in marriage from her father-in-law, he returns a leper. Isolated from everyone, he can only communicate with Irmengarde by candlelight. As long as the candle burns brightly, Guerlach lives.
After 10 years, one evening, Irmengarde approaches his flame. But Guerlach's flame no longer burns.
A legend perhaps, this story, worthy of minstrel tales and courtly love, is set in Volkrange castle. Today, several parts of the castle have been amputated, but some interesting features remain. Round tower, drawbridge, dovecote, private chapel... the atmosphere is there and transports you to the beginning of Thionville's Luxembourg history.

The Association des Amis du Vieux Château de Volkrange has published a book telling the story of Guerlach and Irmengarde, a copy of a medieval manuscript created in its illumination workshop by 4 volunteers.
