Its main activity was to transform barley into malt (the raw material used to make beer and whisky), using a steeping process that allowed artificial germination.
During the Second World War, the Malting Plant was hard hit. In addition to the fact that barley was subject to rigorous German quotas for 4 years, causing it to lose over 50% of its business, it was hit by two aerial bombardments (May 1 and 30 1944). Part of the buildings and machinery, all the roofs, doors, windows and partitions had to be restored. In 1995, the municipality decided to immortalize the chapel's memory in the former grain stores of the Malting Factory.
Since 2000, it has housed the "Ancienne Malterie de Champagne" museum, which presents a heritage (postcards, cups, diplomas, models, paintings, vehicles) illustrating the 20th century, thanks to donations from Chapel families, businesses and friends of the town. A pre-war dwelling and an old-fashioned classroom have been reconstructed. You can also discover tools used by craftsmen, industry (notably textiles) and agriculture, a locomotive and a fire engine from 1935, etc. Finally, since January 2003, the museum has been home to a superb and very rare electrified model of the former SNCF "Eiffel"-style roundhouses, destroyed in May 1944.
