Thil

Thil is a name derived from the Latin word for lime tree. Life in Thil dates back to the early centuries, and tradition has it that the south wall of the church nave was built by Saint Berchaire, who lived in the 7th century AD. A primitive church is attested as early as 660 AD, but the south wall of the nave is Romanesque and the rest dates from the 16th century. As early as 845, the Montier en Der abbey, founded by Saint Berchaire, owned property here, but the stronghold came under Brienne. The Eglise de l'Assomption dates from the 12th/16th/18th centuries.
