A work by the architect Chenevier, completed in 1893, the Verdun theatre was inspired by the Paris Opéra Garnier. The Italian-style hall was built on the banks of the Meuse, on the site of a grain market destroyed by fire. Like the public gardens and other walks, it is part of the beautification and urban leisure activities typical of the 19th century.
Promenades, bandstands and theatres are among the places necessary for the animation of a garrison town.
