Halles de Troyes

Description

Completed and inaugurated in 1874 , Les Halles is the work of municipal architect Edmond Bailly.

It was inspired by the markets of Victor Baltard in Paris , who combined iron, cast iron and glass to build one of the largest covered markets of its kind.

The building is typical of the 19th century in terms of materials and sober, slender lines: eighteen cast iron columns support the enormous cast vault, formed by a triple row of roofs separated by oriel windows. The stone base supports a small wall of coloured bricks into which eight large doors open. The metal framework comes from the workshops of Le Creusot. A mezzanine was added in 1987.

In 2017, major renovation works were carried out on the facades and the glass roof of the covered passageway.

Today , Les Halles is one of Troyes' favourite daily haunts , where you can discover the delicacies and local produce of the Aube region (fruit and vegetables, andouillette, cheeses, champagne, etc.) or more exotic dishes, in a warm, friendly atmosphere that is particularly lively at weekends.

The Marché des Halles de Troyes has about 35 local food shops : butchers, delicatessens, greengrocers, fishmongers, bakers, etc.
