Built in the 17th century, it was sold in 1634 to the Prince de Condé who had it restored and furnished. It was used as a town hall in the 18th century and then sold to Mr Barouet, an amateur and collector, who removed a large part of the sculptures and furniture.
From 1865 to 1954, it was occupied by the Proutat file factory.
Files were cut by hand and precision files were made for the mechanical industry, watchmaking, jewellery, carving and dentistry. It was one of the best file factories of the 19th century, where there was "a file for every trade". It employed up to 400 people.
From the 1960s until 2019, this building housed a vocational education centre.
Since July 2022, the Château d'Arnay has become a restaurant.
