Located in the Meuse valley, 20 km northwest of Verdun, the German cemetery at Consenvoye is home to 11,148 soldiers, making it the largest German cemetery. As early as 1920, the French authorities decided to gather here the German soldiers who had died in the fighting between Verdun and Stenay during the 1st World War.
On September 22, 1984, German Chancellor Helmut Kohl and French President François Mitterrand paid their respects here. In 2016, François Hollande and Angela Merkel will pay their respects together at the cemetery.
