Mines de Grandfontaine

The site is nestled at the foot of the sacred Donon mountain in the Bruche Valley. For nearly 700 years it was the richest iron deposit in the Vosges massif. Redeveloped by the commune in 1981, the Grandfontaine mine offers the public an extraordinary return to the mining world of the 1800s to 1860

The visit is carried out with equipment provided on site (oilskin and helmet). A guide will allow you to discover nearly 800 m of spacious galleries with walls covered with neoformed concretions of copper sulphate (blue) and iron hydroxide in the form of rust brown stalactites. Worked with explosives, large lower cavities allow you to realize the enormous quantity of ore extracted (hematite and pyrite). Former flooded shafts are still visible and gave access to the six lower floors, which are now inaccessible
