The former Mützig brewery was an important site for the production of Alsatian craft beer in the 1950s. Located on the Alsace wine route, Mutzig is about 20 km from Strasbourg.
Please note: it is not open to the public, only the park!
The brewery was founded in 1810 by master cooper Antoine Wagner. He set up in the heart of Mutzig (currently no. 56, rue du Maréchal Foch), then moved to the current site at the western entrance to the town to expand production to 500 hectolitres a year. In 1844, his son Jérôme inherited the brewery and increased production to 6,000 hectolitres a year by 1870.
In 1886, Camille Wagner succeeded Jérôme and transformed the brewery into a Société Anonyme (SA). Louis Pasteur?s work on beer fermentation and preservation enabled him to modernize the plant, increasing production from 25,000 hectoliters in 1900 to 40,000 hectoliters in 1914. Camille built the "Villa Wagner" on the slopes of the Felsbourg hill, slightly overlooking the brewery. Jérôme II's son Roland occupied the villa from 1949 until 1997.
In 1932, Jérôme Wagner II took over the management and marketed the family beer worldwide. Production reached 70,000 hectolitres a year in 1940. By 1950, craft beer was the most widely consumed beer in Alsace. In 1959, Roland Wagner took over from his father and automated the bottling lines. By 1964, production had risen to 340,000 hectolitres a year.
Brasserie Mutzig became part of Alsacienne de Brasserie (Albra) in 1969, which in turn was acquired by the Dutch Heineken group in 1972.
a In 1989, Heineken closed the brewery and in 1990, part of the buildings and equipment were destroyed. The site was bought by the town of Mutzig in 1992, and rehabilitated in 2009. The listed building, nicknamed "le château" for its architecture, now houses a business incubator. Two annexes have also been built to accommodate public services and a hotel.
The Wagner family's Mutzig beer no longer exists. Today, the brand belongs to the Heineken group, which markets it in Africa as a "Pils" blonde ale, whose name is spelled "Mützig" with an umlaut for legal reasons, as only beer brewed in Mutzig in Alsace and using water from Mutzig can bear this name.
In 2001, the Wagner brewery in Mutzig was listed as a historic monument.
