This square bears the name of a former mayor of Mézières, after its founder, mayor of Mézières (from 1878 to 1903). In 1892, facing the northern rampart of Mézières, this municipal square was laid out by the unemployed of Mézières. On July 30, 1893, the Minister of War, General Loizillon inaugurated the bronze statue of the Knight Bayard, a stone's throw from the School Tower. The statue is 2.80 m high and its pedestal is 4 m high. The work of the sculptor Aristide Croisy (Fagnon, 1840 - Paris, 1899) was taken by the Germans in 1917 to be cast into cannons. Another work is really worth the detour: a bas-relief entitled "The Pilgrim of Life". This square is totally invested every last weekend of August for the famous "Cabaret Vert" festival, a rock and territory festival, where the currency is the "bayard"!
