In 1959, André Malraux, then Minister of Culture, offered François Schleiter, Mayor of Verdun, 16 monumental statues representing Generals and Marshals of the First and Second Empires as well as of the First World War. Originally, they were to adorn the boulevards of Paris. Among these historical figures, we find Cambronne, Oudinot, Exelmans, ..

To see :
-- the bastions (17th century),
-- the Porte Neuve (currently being renovated) and its former guardhouse,
-- the entrance to the "Artillery" listening room leading to the gunpowder stores of the lower citadel.
