The Tour du Roy is the result of a plan to modernise the ramparts ordered by François I after the siege of Mézières by the troops of Charles V in 1521.
Despite the city's brave resistance under the command of the knight Bayard, this siege revealed the ageing of the old walls. François I therefore had the fortifications reinforced. The walls of this tower are 6 metres thick and inside are vaulted casemates that opened with gun ports. The roof was flat: the tower had to withstand cannon fire and allow the French artillery to defend the city.
A crenellated water tower was added in 1885. its neo-medieval appearance!
