Here we see the ruins of the fortified gate of the chapel of St. Honorat.
The present chapel dates from the 19th century , but was built on or near an older holy site , possibly medieval.
According to tradition, Saint-Honorat lived here as a hermit in the 4th century, before founding the abbey on the Île Saint-Honorat (Lérins Islands near Cannes).
Saint-Honorat of Lérins is the patron saint of farmers, hermits and religious communities in the south of France.
It takes about 20 minutes to walk, sometimes on steep paths , to reach the cave and the nearby spring. About twenty meters before reaching the cave, visitors cross the threshold of an impressive stone defensive gate built into the rocky ridge. It stands out against the horizon and extends the natural curves of the cliff.
