Scientists thought that Great Britain, the main island of the United Kingdom, was created millions of years ago by the merging of two ancient land masses: Laurentia and Avalonia. However, a study in 2018 showed that a third land mass, Armorica, was also involved in that process. Most of Cornwall and a stretch of Devon, in the extreme southwest of Great Britain, seem to belong to what is now France.
