The Royal Exchange, the stock exchange of London, was founded by merchant Thomas Gresham. He was active as a trader in Antwerp and picked up the idea of establishing a stock exchange there. This is now home to the central bank of England or The Bank of England. There is still a link with Belgium. The first governor of the Bank of England, John Houblon, was the son of a Huguenot who fled from Hainaut. The governor himself was married to the daughter of a Flemish immigrant. When he died in 1712, he was buried in the church of St. Christopher-le-Stocks.
