Port of Genoa

The port group "Ports of Genoa" (Genoa, Pra’, Savona, Vado Ligure) processes more than 64 million tons of cargo and approximately 2.8 million TEU containers annually. This makes it Italy’s largest port in total freight volume and one of the most important container ports in the Mediterranean.

The port extends over about 22 km of coastline and around 700 hectares, with more than 20 specialized terminals for containers, bulk, oil products, roll-on/roll-off, cruises, and ferries.

Approximately 5 million passengers pass through via cruise ships and ferries each year, making Genoa's passenger role uniquely strong.

Why is the port located here

Historically, Genoa grew into a maritime republic in the Middle Ages precisely because of this natural "hinge position" between the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. Liguria covers the entire arc along the Ligurian Sea, from the French border to Tuscany; the coastal strip is called the Italian Riviera. Genoa is located on the northwest coast of Italy, exactly where the Ligurian coast forms an "arc"; it is the capital of Liguria and the center of the Italian Riviera. The city serves as the maritime gateway to the densely populated and industrialized Po Valley and beyond to Switzerland, Southern Germany, and Austria. Via rail and highways, the port is directly connected to these inland areas, allowing goods from Asia (via Suez) to quickly reach the heart of Europe.

Genoa is situated approximately in the middle of this coast and traditionally divides the Riviera into Riviera di Ponente (towards France) and Riviera di Levante (towards Cinque Terre/Tuscany). Thus, Genoa is both a working port city and a base for tourists heading towards Portofino, Cinque Terre, and other seaside resorts of the Riviera.

Within the Mediterranean, Genoa is considered a crucial container and multipurpose hub, as it combines large volumes with strong hinterland connections.
