The Castello di Nipozzano was built in the year 1000 and belongs to the (wealthy) Frescobaldi family, which has been active in winemaking for 30 generations or 700 years. Thanks to their 5000ha of vineyards, they can distribute their wines in about 65 countries! When passing by vineyards, you often see a sign stating "Marchèsi di Frescobaldi."
Nipozzano is one of their 5 agricultural estates in Tuscany and is about 626ha in size. They mainly grow the Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot grapes.
Some of their top wines:
* Nipozzano Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG: a bit of a symbol of their Tuscan activities,
* Montesodi Riserva (since 1974): a Cru that is only produced in the best wine years,
* Mormoreto (since 1983): "il grande vino" of the castle
The POI was placed at the beginning of the driveway to the Castello and is immediately the peak of the "Climb Nipozzano." The Castello Nipozzano is constantly and prominently visible during this climb from Pontassieve: 2.82km at an average of 8.25% with a maximum of as much as 14%. One to remember...
