Piazza XX Settembre is at the height of the Ponte di Mezzo and overlooks Piazza Garibaldi across the river.
To the left of Piazza XX Settembre (with its back to the Logge di Banchi) is Palazzo Gambacorti (seat of the municipality): a fine Pisan Gothic building with a double row of double lancet windows and inscriptions and coats of arms adorning the facade.
The building is now the seat of the municipality, which is why the square is called Piazza del Comune by the Pisans.
The atrium in the square leads to the courtyard, with columns with capitals from the 15th century and walls decorated with coats of arms of the magistrates' boards.
On the left is the tower with the clock of the Palazzo Pretorio where the municipal library is now located.
