The Hondsbësch Gallery near Niederkorn in the municipality of Differdingen was a decommissioned mining site that served as a hiding place for young men seeking to escape the illegal conscription into the German Wehrmacht during the period of the German occupation of Luxembourg. Due to the high casualties of the Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front, military service was announced in the quasi-annexed Luxembourg on August 30, 1942, by the head of the civil administration, Gustav Simon, for the CdZ area of Luxembourg. Many conscripts tried to evade military service by hiding with relatives, friends, acquaintances, and other Luxembourgish patriots. The largest hideout in Luxembourg was located in the partially decommissioned Hondsbësch pit near Niederkorn, where at times 122 refugees hid.
