Esch-sur-Sûre has only 250 inhabitants. It is nestled between the mountains and is, like a small peninsula, surrounded by the Sûre River. It is said to be one of the most beautiful villages in the Grand Duchy. A blunt tower and some other remnants of a medieval castle from 927 dominate the landscape. For a long time, Esch was somewhat isolated, and to bring it out of its isolation, a tunnel had to be dug in 1850. In 1954, a second tunnel was constructed, leading to the nearby reservoir. That lake is so integrated into the landscape that it seems like a whim of nature, but it was artificially created in the sixties for water supply.
