At the Monte Carlo Casino on August 18, 1913, the roulette ball landed on black 26 times in a row, an extremely rare event. Many players lost millions by betting more and more on red, thinking that red "had to come"—a classic example of the gambler's fallacy. The odds of this happening on European roulette (with 37 pockets) are about 1 in 145 million.
The famous Monte Carlo fallacy was named after this incident.
