Gaasterland is located in National Landscape Southwest Fryslân. The region is, unlike the mostly flat meadow character of Friesland, sloping and wooded. The word gaast (also called spirit) denotes higher sandy soil.
In the penultimate ice age (Saalien), the pressure of the land ice created boulder clay humps along the Texel-Wieringen-Gaasterland-Urk-Schokland-Vollenhove line. Boulder clay is a mix of clay and stones formed under the ice sheet (ground moraine).
