Count Ansfried founded Thorn Abbey in 985. He became bishop of Utrecht 10 years later. The oldest part of the current church dates from the 12th century. The striking striped superstructure of the tower was installed by architect Cuypers who also rebuilt numerous other churches in this region in the 19th century. Also striking is the baroque high altar from 1769 by Franz Xaver Bader. It was originally intended for the Carthusian monastery of Roermond.
