The Moerdijk and the Moerdijk Bridge are a household name for the Netherlands. Who doesn't know the expression "above or below the Moerdijk". The expression above/below the Moerdijk is more or less synonymous with above/below the major rivers and is related to the fact that Moerdijk was traditionally the location where the important north-south connection from South Holland to North Brabant crossed the Hollandsch Diep. It also insinuates a difference in "behavior," "culture," or "mentality" above and below this physical boundary.
