Initially, the intention was to build a closed dam between Noord-Beveland and Schouwen-Duiveland. The salty sea arm would then become a freshwater lake, and there would be no more tides. This meant the disappearance of the valuable salty tidal nature in the Oosterschelde. Both nature conservationists and oyster and mussel fishermen rose up against this.
The politics decided on a compromise: a sluice that is generally open and can be closed in the event of impending high water. Rijkswaterstaat, along with the contractors, faced a technically groundbreaking challenge: a foundation on sand and clay in fast-flowing water, at depths of over 30 m, with centimeter precision, with pillars weighing 18,000 tons each. And a total length of 9 km.
The Oosterschelde storm surge barrier is the most famous Delta work. Never before has such a construction been built anywhere in the world that closes a sea arm in the event of impending dangerously high water. With the push of a button, 62 sluice gates can be lowered.
