City architect Danièl Stalpaert designed four squares for public churches in 1660/62 as part of the new city layout. The church that was to be built here would be a temporary "wooden preaching house," in which they intended to "make the square or field next to that Church large enough, so that at some time, a stone Church could be placed on it." As the only remaining wooden emergency church, the simple church building from 1668/70 still stands. The stone church that was supposed to replace it was never built.
