Nowadays, Twickel Castle is a popular destination for a day trip. The castle itself cannot be visited, but the associated gardens can be visited for a fee. In addition, there are beautiful forests and fields around the castle that are often used as a walking area. The European hiking route E11 also runs through the forests, which runs from The Hague to the east, currently to the Poland/Lithuania border. The routes are also known locally as Marskramerpad and Handelsweg.
The oldest mention of Twickel is in 1347. The last owner transferred Twickel to a foundation, which still manages the assets. Twickel was also regularly the stage for political negotiations and official receptions.
