Next to the lock is the statue of the innkeeper Kaatje, who, according to tradition, served her customers the tastiest dishes based on her secret recipe books. In 1732 Kaatje was robbed and died of her wounds. Her recipe books resurfaced years later in various places around the Zuiderzee, but the perpetrators were never found. Kaatje remained alone all her life, waiting for her childhood sweetheart Hilbert, a merchant marine mate. He only came back to Blokzijl a few weeks after her death, rich, but too late for Kaatje. On the site of her old inn we now find the renowned star restaurant "Kaatje bij de Sluis".
