The Reest is a raised peat stream, which largely forms the border between the provinces of Overijssel and Drenthe. By Dutch standards, it is unique that the Reest still meanders so strongly. The Reestdal (varying in width from approximately 100 meters to 500 meters) offers a good breeding ground for the storks that live at the stork station De Lokkerij, near Havixhorst and in the area near the Drentse Pieperij. In addition to these striking birds, there are also badgers and foxes and there is a special flora, including northern sedge, large pimpernel and stiff ostrich. In addition, the rare marsh cartel leaf, called the Orchid of the Reest, grows there.
