Halsteren is a village within the North Brabant municipality of Bergen op Zoom. It has 12,020 inhabitants (January 1, 2010).
Halsteren is located on the Brabant Wal, which means that within the village, height differences of up to 10 meters can be observed.
The name Halsteren is derived from Halstert, which is said to be composed of Halha, meaning spur of highland, and stert, meaning tail, considering the elongated shape of the spur. Another theory points back to the name in dialect: Altere. This is thought to originate from Latin and is a corruption of "Alta Terra," High Land, and would refer to its location on the Brabant Wal.
Halsteren likely originated as a peat extraction village.
In 1628, a number of forts were constructed east of Halsteren, part of the West Brabant Water Line.
