Before WW2, Doorwerth Castle housed the Dutch Army Museum, but that collection was moved to Leiden in 1944. During the Battle of Arnhem, the castle was occupied by Germans and was largely destroyed by Allied shelling in the winter of 44/45, but eventually by blowing up by the Germans.
The Allies were supplied with parachute drops, but sometimes they fell into German hands. (see photo)
In 1949, after the start of the restoration, the Airborne Museum was founded, which moved to its current location in 1978, the former Hotel Hartenstein.
