The watermill of Diepenheim is mentioned as early as the Middle Ages. The oldest known mention of the mill dates back to 1169. It is a undershot mill that has been adapted as a grain mill. In an undershot mill, the water flows underneath the wheel through a groove. The groove is a channel that is shaped to the wheel. It prevents water from flowing underneath and alongside the blades without driving them.
The mill is powered by the water of the Diepenheimse Molenbeek. The mill forms the center of a hamlet consisting of several farms and houses. This is probably also where the origin of Diepenheim lies.
Until 1970, the mill was still in operation on a daily basis. Farmers from the surrounding area had their grain ground there. They then took the flour home to bake bread or to feed the pigs.
The watermill has largely been preserved in its original form. It stands on wooden piles in the mill pool. The tarred wooden façades and worn steps show the traces of the past. That does not take away from the fact that the mill is again in good condition after a recent restoration.
