Hertme is one of the three villages in the Dutch province of Overijssel. It has 520 inhabitants and is located in a wooded area in the Twente region, about seven kilometers north of Hengelo. The open-air theatre, located in the heart of Hertme, is the attraction of the village. From the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s, the open-air theatre was best known for the Hertme Passion Plays, which were performed there every year. Two annual performances held in Hertme, the Africa Festival and Metropool Open Air, attract thousands of visitors from all over the Netherlands or even Europe.
The Catholic St. Stephen's Church, a neo-Gothic building built in 1903, is an early work of architect Wolter te Riele. Hertme used to be home to the Grotenhuis manor.
