Opposite the Brakestein house are the Orphan's Wells. These were owned by the orphanage in Den Burg, which mainly sold the water from these wells to the ships that sailed from the Rede from Texel to the Indies.
Due to the high iron content (visible by the brown color), the water from the Wezenputten had a longer shelf life than water from elsewhere. Normally, the supply taken was sufficient until the Cape of Good Hope, where fresh water could be taken at Table Bay.
The drinking water from the wells was poured into wooden barrels with the help of a pump, which were ready in sloops. The barrels of water from the Wezenputten were transported by boats via the Skilsloot to the dike. There, the barrels were hoisted over the dike into other sloops, which then delivered the water to the sailing ships.
