Seismology is a scientific discipline within geophysics that deals with the study, description, and measurement of seismic waves in earthquakes.
In 1993, the underground seismic station HGN (Heimansgroeve) in the quiet Geul valley near the Heimansgroeve was built and put into operation. The building, which is more than 7 metres deep, is founded on the hard Carboniferous rock, so that the registrations are not bothered by soil noise, such as wind and traffic.
Station HGN is part of the global network of seismometers whose data are exchanged with international seismological centers.
