In the winter of 1995, the Maas and Waal became even more famous when the dikes threatened to burst. Tens of thousands of people had to be evacuated, but fortunately the dikes held. However, plans were made to improve the dikes. Today, those plans have been realized; between Dreumel and Weurt there is now a dike of a dike. We doubt that motorcycling has been thought of, but there is no doubt that it is pleasant to ride a motorcycle.
The water-rich Land of Maas and Waal stretches from the Sint-Andries lock near Heerewaarden to the Maas-Waal canal near Nijmegen. At its ends are two large nature development areas: Fort Sint-Andries and De Gelderse Poort. Water is always emphatically present. In previous centuries, this part of the Rivierenland, which also consists of the Betuwe and Bommelerwaard, was frequently plagued by dike breaches and floods. Especially in this Land of Maas and Waal there are still many traces of the heroic fight against the water.
