The Linge is a river that flows in the Betuwe from Doornenburg to Gorinchem. The Linge flows amidst a varied landscape with orchards, meadows, pilot whales and reed beds. With 108 km it is the longest all-Dutch river. Via the Linge, the seepage and rainwater from more than 70,000 hectares of Betuwe soil is drained and eventually discharged into the Merwede.
The Linge was once a river that caused dike breaches and floods. The condition of the land was so uncertain that farmers were paid if they let some low-lying polders grazed by their cattle. These polders were flooded so often that there was no interest in using them.
Now the Lingestreek is a unique area where the system of ditches and the location of mills and farms has remained unchanged in many places over the centuries.
