Fort Saint Philip

Description

In a sharp inner bend of the Scheldt, four kilometers north of the Antwerp city center, lies Fort Sint-Filips. Alexander Farnese, Duke of Parma, built it in 1584 together with Fort Sint-Marie during the siege of Antwerp.
With these two 'counter forts' he wanted to cut the city off from the State forts Lillo and Liefkenshoek. Between the two forts he also built his impressive ship bridge. After the fall of Antwerp, Fort Sint-Filips remained of great military importance, to counterbalance Lillo and Liefkenshoek.
