Walking under the bridge you experience the construction of the bridge best. The bridge in its current form was put into use in 1957 and is built on the foundations of the old railway bridge. Until the Second World War there was only a rail connection over the Rhine Bridge, part of the Amsterdam - Cologne line. This railway bridge, which was built from three arch spans, was destroyed twice during the war, in 1940 and in 1944. The rail connection has not been restored and the train from Utrecht now stops in Rhenen on the north side of the Rhine. The current motorway over the bridge is one of the busiest single-lane roads in the Netherlands. Plans to widen the Rhine bridge in 2025, as decided by the provinces of Utrecht and Gelderland, are delayed due to the nitrogen problem.
