In the spring of 1940, the Dutch army had installed barricades in the form of sewer pipes filled with concrete and holes dug in the road surface. On 10 May 1940, however, the German invaders had armoured cars fitted with an iron stake with which they could easily push the sewer pipes aside. Curious bystanders were ordered by the Germans to extend a helping hand and had to close the holes in the road surface again.
