We already know that the Turfmarkt refers to the peat trade in Gouda. Our city has been the largest peat market and transshipment port for Holland. This is due to the high yield of peat from the technique of slagturven or turftrekken. As a result, the number of Gouda peat shipowners is increasing. By the end of the 16th century, most are dependent on the peat trade. This continues until peat firing is replaced by coal firing.
